Two arrested, illegal guns seized in Norwood raid
A tip-off from a vigilant resident led police to two suspects and unlicensed firearms, hidden in a flat in Norwood.
Quick action by the Norwood Crime Prevention team led to two unlicensed firearms being taken off the streets and two suspects arrested, thanks to the swift action of Norwood SAPS officers and an alert member of the public.
The incident unfolded on July 27, when a concerned resident visited Norwood Police Station to report suspicious behaviour. According to Warrant Officer Eric Masotsha, the complainant had noticed tenants at a residential building along Grant Avenue openly displaying a firearm from their balcony.
Upon arrival, they spotted the suspects on the balcony and approached them. After identifying themselves as police officers, they requested permission to search the suspects’ room – a request that was granted.
Inside, officers discovered one pistol with seven rounds of ammunition, one revolver with four rounds, and an extra empty magazine.

Neither suspect could produce a valid licence for the firearms or explain how they came to possess them. They were promptly arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Both were informed of their rights and detained without incident.
Masotsha praised the community member who came forward, stating, “We thank those who trust the police enough to report criminal behaviour. Partnerships like these, along with the support of local security companies, help us keep Norwood safer.”
Authorities urge the public to report any suspicious activity by calling 081 001 0111 or the Station Relief Commander on 071 675 6057.
