CMJAH’s former communication manager applauds CEO’s leadership skills
CMJAH's most devastating blow came in April 2021.
Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital’s former communication manager, Tabudi Madisha, commended the hospital’s CEO’s leadership skills.
Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH) has stood as a pillar of public healthcare in South Africa, not only as the country’s only central hospital with 14 cluster hospitals under its umbrella, but also as a critical institution serving millions.
Madisha said, “At the helm of this complex and high-pressure environment is chief executive officer, Gladys Bogoshi, whose leadership was tested by some of the most daunting challenges any hospital administrator could face. Yet, time and again, she has proven her resilience, strategic thinking, and unwavering commitment to patient care.”

The hospital faced numerous challenges over the years, including infrastructure decay, financial constraints, and the ever-growing burden of patient demand.
The former communication manager noted that the most devastating blow came in April 2021, when a fire broke out, causing extensive damage and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of patients.
“In that moment of chaos, Bogoshi’s leadership shone brightest. Under her direction, not a single life was lost, and no patients went missing during that extraordinary feat, given the scale of the emergency. The aftermath of the fire could have crippled the hospital indefinitely, but the CEO spearheaded recovery efforts with remarkable efficiency.”

Through phased reopening and temporary service relocations, the hospital gradually restored all services and is now operating at a bed capacity that exceeds levels before the fire incident. Bogoshi’s ability to collaborate with government, private sector partners, and hospital staff ensured that patient care continued with minimal disruption is a testament to her hands-on and solution-driven approach.
Madisha lauded Bogoshi’s tenure as the longest-serving CEO in Gauteng’s public health sector and said it was no accident.
“It is the result of her deep institutional knowledge, her ability to navigate bureaucratic and political hurdles, and her unwavering focus on service delivery. Unlike her critics, who often comment from the sidelines without ever having managed even a small project, Bogoshi operates in the trenches, making split-second decisions that affect lives daily.”

He added that having watched the CEO lead the hospital reminded him of a soccer match analysis. The so-called football experts, who have the luxury of time to analyse every move, criticise passes they were never pressured to make.
Madisha added that the real player, the one on the field, must decide in real-time, with no room for hesitation, “Bogoshi is that player, making tough calls amid crises, balancing the budget, and ensuring patients receive the best possible patient care.”
The former communication manager concluded that, having had the privilege of working under Bogoshi’s leadership, he’s witnessed her dedication up close.
“She is not a leader who hides in boardrooms, but she is always present, engaging with staff, listening to challenges, and driving solutions. Her critics, often removed from the realities of public healthcare, fail to grasp the complexities of managing a hospital like CMJAH. Leadership isn’t about perfection, but steering through storms and emerging stronger.”
