St John’s College learners roll up their sleeves to make a difference on Heritage Day

The learners got to work clearing Pieter Roos Park, in Parktown, a century-old green space, of litter, in between informal football matches.

Heritage Day in South Africa is often celebrated through music, food, and cultural traditions.

This year, on September 24, a group of St John’s College learners marked the day in a different way… By rolling up their sleeves to help restore one of Johannesburg’s oldest public spaces.

Pieter Roos Park, in Parktown, a century-old green space, has fallen into neglect in recent years. Local reports have raised concerns about its deteriorating condition, crime, and informal occupation.

Led by Grade 11 learner Zach Sundayi, the learners spent the public holiday clearing litter and speaking with community members who use the park daily.

Alongside the bustle of informal football matches and makeshift shelters, the boys filled more than 30 bags of litter in a few hours, covering over half the park.

Onlookers stopped to thank the learners, commending their efforts to protect a space that has long served surrounding neighbourhoods. While their contribution was a small step, plans are already underway to extend the initiative to other parks in the precinct.

The state of Pieter Roos Park underscores the need for greater collective action to safeguard Johannesburg’s public spaces. Restoring them is not only about cleanliness; it’s about renewing pride in the heart of the city, a place that remains central to South Africa’s heritage.

“This small effort from the boys is a reminder that we all have a role to play in preserving our city,” said Mickey Mashego, head of community engagement.

“We cannot allow our public spaces to fall into disrepair while waiting for someone else to act. This is our city, our country, our heritage.”
