2 St John’s College learners prepare to serve in the Johannesburg Junior Council

The Johannesburg Junior Council is a youth-led organisation comprising 80 councillors from over 40 schools across the city.

St John’s College commends its learners, Sechaba Masithela and Thushaan Naidu, on their appointment as Johannesburg Junior Councillors (JJC) for 2026.

The school noted, “This tradition of service reflects St John’s broader ethos of developing young men who lead with purpose and compassion, and make a positive difference in their world.”

The JJC is a youth-led organisation comprising 80 councillors drawn from over 40 schools across the city.

Its purpose is to serve, uplift, and empower Johannesburg communities through meaningful engagement, community service, and youth-driven initiatives. The council hosts events that include, among others, donation drives, outreach programmes, and awareness projects aimed at improving the communities around us.

Sechaba explained that his aim as a councillor in 2026 is to make a meaningful and lasting difference in the communities around him.

“One of my key aspirations is to raise awareness and advocate for youth mental health. A challenge that affects a significant portion of young people in South Africa.”

Thushaan said his objectives include improving literacy rates and access to books.

“I recognise that I have been fortunate to have had access to education and opportunities, and I want to use that to help others who haven’t had the same.”
