The burst pipe near the Hyde Park Hill complex continues to gush, creating a sinkhole and posing a serious safety hazard. The ongoing water loss has raised concerns about infrastructure failures at a time when water conservation remains a critical priority.

Stand-in Ward 90 councillor Hendrik Bodenstein confirmed that Johannesburg Water is aware of the incident.

“There is a large water burst on Ruth in Hyde Park. Johannesburg Water is aware of the issue and has instructed that the valves be closed to allow repairs to take place. As a result, surrounding areas may currently be without water,” said Bodenstein. “I know this is frustrating and disruptive. The priority now is to stop the water loss and get the supply restored as quickly as possible.”

The publication reached out to Johannesburg Water for comment on December 19. This story will be updated once a response is received.
