Derry Road excavation continues to affect traffic in Greenside East

Motorists in Greenside East are navigating around a long-standing road excavation, with repairs still pending.

An excavation on Derry Road in Greenside East is continuing to affect traffic flow near the intersection with Donegal Avenue.

The section of road has been dug up, exposing soil and underground piping, with temporary hazard tape marking off the area. While the site is clearly cordoned off, the excavation narrows the roadway, requiring motorists to slow down and manoeuvre carefully as they pass.

Drivers travelling through the area during peak times may experience slight delays, particularly as the excavation is positioned close to a set of traffic lights. Some residents have noted that the disruption has been ongoing for several weeks.

Ward 87 councillor Kyle Jacobs said the situation reflected broader challenges related to infrastructure maintenance and reinstatement across the city.

“We continue to face ongoing challenges with the resolution of reinstatements across the city. There remains a backlog, and there has been no improvement since the last time your publication covered this issue and sought comment from me,” said Jacobs.

He added that concerns have been raised with the Johannesburg Roads Agency and Joburg Water, but that progress had been slow.

Jacobs also highlighted pressures on municipal resources, noting that budget constraints may be affecting maintenance and service delivery in areas such as roads, water and electricity.

Joburg Water was contacted for comment on March 25. Spokesperson Phakamani Ndlovu confirmed that the query had been received and shared with the relevant departments, with a response expected within 48 working hours, depending on the complexity of the matter.

However, no feedback had been received by the time of publication.

In the meantime, motorists are advised to approach the area with caution while travelling along Derry Road.
