Wanted robbery suspect found hiding in abandoned Orange Grove property
A joint police operation in Norwood led to the arrest of a long-sought armed robbery suspect who had evaded capture for nearly two years.
Norwood police and local security teams have arrested a man on the run for nearly two years, in connection with an armed robbery case in Orange Grove.
Following a co-ordinated crime prevention operation, the arrest took place on March 8, at around 11:00, when officers conducted a joint operation aimed at tackling crime hotspots in the area.
According to Warrant Officer Eric Masotsha, the operation was led by Vispol Commander Lieutenant Colonel Steven Jacobs, and focused on properties suspected of harbouring criminal activity.

Their efforts led them to an abandoned property in Orange Grove, where several occupants were found living. Police conducted routine profiling using a newly introduced tracing device designed to identify wanted suspects. It was during this process that the system flagged one individual as being wanted in connection with an armed robbery case opened in Norwood in December 2024.
“The device automatically provided the outcome, confirming that the suspect was linked to the case,” said Masotsha. “He was immediately apprehended, informed of his rights, and transported to Norwood police cells for formal detention.”
The suspect is expected to appear in court soon. Police say he had managed to evade arrest since the case was first reported, with no trace of his whereabouts until now.
Authorities have raised concerns about abandoned properties becoming safe havens for criminal activity. Masotsha urged property owners to take responsibility for securing their buildings, warning that neglected spaces can easily be exploited.

“We appeal to property owners not to leave their premises unattended. If necessary, they should ensure proper security measures are in place to prevent these spaces from being used by criminals.”
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or illegal activity. Incidents can be reported via the crime stop number: 08600 10111, or by contacting local relief commanders directly.
The successful arrest highlights the growing role of technology in policing, as well as the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and community security structures in keeping neighbourhoods safe.
