EFF pickets in solidarity with Houghton Golf Club guest and the people of Palestine

Louis Seeco was banned from the Houghton Club for displaying a Palestinian flag on his vehicle.

In a previous version of this article, it was stated that Louis Seeco was a member of Houghton Golf Club. The club has since clarified that Seeco was a visitor attending as the guest of a member and has never held membership at the club. It added that no member was banned, suspended or had their membership revoked in relation to the matter.

Meanwhile, the ANC is expected to stage a picket outside the club this morning from 10:00.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supporters protested at the entrance of the Houghton Golf Club on April 22, while there was a heavy presence of 24/7 security services and Norwood Police Station officers, following the ban of Louis Seeco, for displaying a Palestinian flag on his vehicle.

EFF provincial secretary, Moshe Koma, said the party’s picket was in solidarity with Seeco.

“We are here today following the incidents that happened in this area, where one indivudual was deeply harassed, and he was threatened for having a Palestinian flag on his car. We are brought here by the white supremacists, because racism is what took place here.”

Koma added that Seeco had done nothing wrong.

He accused the club of attempting to diminish the people of Palestine.

“Palestinians are treated like dogs, and children are killed in Gaza. So we are here to demonstrate in solidarity with the people of Palestine, and we are not going to let our oppressors in this current democracy treat people the way they are treating them.”

The media statement said, “Houghton Golf Club is proudly diverse and inclusive. It is precisely because we value and respect the wide range of backgrounds, beliefs and cultures represented within our membership, staff and guests that the club cannot allow the display of political or religious symbols.”

The statement added that the club does not promote, endorse or take positions on political or religious causes.

The African National Congress announced through social media that it will also be picketing outside the club on April 24, which is part of the party’s broader campaign to defend constitutional rights, freedom of expression and its unwavering solidarity with the people of Palestine.
