Cartrack employee’s death prompts Economic Freedom Fighters intervention
The EFF says it will continue pursuing answers after meeting Cartrack over allegations surrounding the death of an employee at the company's Rosebank offices.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Subregion B has called for an independent investigation into the circumstances regarding the death of a Cartrack employee, Gcina Dhladhla, after meeting with the company’s human resources department at its Rosebank offices on June 9.
According to the EFF, representatives from its labour desk and subregional command team met with Cartrack’s human resources manager Neo Nkobo to seek understanding on allegations circulating on social media surrounding the employee’s death.

In a statement issued after the meeting, the EFF said it was not satisfied with the outcome of the engagement, claiming that the company had not provided tangible responses and noting that internal investigations were in progress.
The party stated, however, that Nkobo confirmed that the company would help the family with funeral arrangements.

The EFF alleged that Dhladhla’s family had provided information implying that two medical notes had been submitted to the company prior to the incident, including one on the day. However, she was denied sick leave.
As part of its demands, the EFF requested for the release of the deceased’s employment records, medical note records, attendance records, and relevant CCTV footage that covers relevant dates and times to an independent investigator.

The publication spoke to the EFF Subregion B communication and liaison officer, Lunga Nkwenkwezi, before their engagement with the company’s human resources manager. Nkwenkwezi said, besides seeking support for the family, the reason behind their visit is to protect workers.
“As the labour desk of the EFF, our mandate is to ensure that an incident such as this, never occurs again.”
In a statement issued by the company, Cartrack said the employee seemed fine when she arrived at work on the day of the incident. At 09:00, she informed her manager that she was feeling dizzy and nauseous, before becoming unresponsive in the bathroom.

On-site, trained, first responders attended to her while emergency medical services were called to the scene. The company rejected claims that the deceased had been denied sick leave, stating that she previously took sick leave, which was accompanied by a sick note.
“These claims are deeply distressing, particularly at a time when our colleague’s family, friends, and colleagues are grieving her loss.”
The company added that internal investigations into the incident are under way.
