Pirates Bowls Club members kick off Sunday social bowls in Parkhurst

Warm weather and freshly treated greens draw local bowlers together for a morning of social bowling at Pirates Bowls Club.

Pirates Bowls Club members turned out in large numbers to kick off their Sunday with precision on October 4, aiming to get as close as possible to the jack.

Social bowls were underway, seeing members team up and play against one another.

Bronwyn Gleeson, a bowls member, said she frequented the social Sunday bowls. “I have been bowling since 2017. I play the game because it is a game that everyone can play,” Gleeson said. “There’s no gender or age advantage and I think it’s an enjoyable and strategic game.”

She added that lawn bowls was like chess on the green and a good way to socialise, make friends, and sometimes make a few enemies, though you become friends in the end.

Today was great, the green has been redone for spring treatment and we’ve been enjoying playing on it.”

Social bowls take place every Sunday from 09:00 to 12:30 and is open to all ages. There is also a café on site that provides hot beverages and healthy breakfasts, plus an outdoor play facility for children.
