Comfortable win for Old Eds

HOUGHTON – After the previous match was rained off, the Old Edwardian premier league cricket team was highly focused when they played S&E Delfos at home.

Old Eds batted first and there were solid contributions from Malcolm Nofal (31) and Devon Conway (30), who made a welcome return from Provincial duties.

Old Eds’ Mike Dunk said the fall of the second wicket brought King Edward VII School pupil Grant Roelofsen to the wicket with a need to increase the run rate.

“Striking the ball sweetly, Roelofsen took on the spinners aerially and along the ground to score a very impressive 90 off 85 balls,” said Dunk.

Roelofsen lost his wicket in the cause of making quick runs toward the end of the 50 overs.

“He was well-supported by Gareth Harte to hit 18 off the last over and finish on 70 not out as the home side reached 240/5 in their 50 overs,” said Dunk.

Debutant Ethan O’Reilly took a wicket with the first ball of the Delfos innings, and with the consistent and dangerous David Sartor weighing in with two wickets, Delfos were soon 40 for three.

“Mathew Varner and Ryan Cook were miserly in conceding just 11 runs in 10 overs, before Richard das Neves spun his web of intrigue to finish with 6/34 to bowl Delfos out for 131 and secure a bonus point,” said Dunk.

Old Eds won by 109 runs, which moved them above the Wanderers in the table to third spot, trailing Pirates by six points and leaders UJ by nine.

Old Eds has yet to play these teams.
