SA Canoe Polo Championships at Emmerentia
EMMERENTIA - The South African Canoe Polo Championships were recently held at Emmarentia Dam.
Men’s teams and mixed teams from Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape competed in two categories, U21 and senior.
Traditional rivals Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal were given more than a run for their money by the teams from the Western Cape.
The matches were competitive and entertaining for the spectators, as the teams settled in to play hard with each other and to feel out the opposition.
In the U21 category, the Gauteng Scouts proved their mettle, playing for the first time in a competition of this nature and enjoying games of a high standard against their rival teams.
The true competition in this category was between Gauteng and the Aurecon Western Cape U21 teams. The final was a hotly-contested game that had parents and spectators cheering loudly. The Western Cape ultimately won gold in this category.
In the senior division, the real competition and undoubtedly the match of the tournament was the final match between two
Gauteng teams. Among the many participants was local resident from Parktown Peter Geach, who played for the Gauteng men’s team.
The Gauteng Men and the Gauteng Barbarians competed against each other for first place.
The battle between the two local sides saw the score see-sawing back and forth, ending in a draw.
The Gauteng Barbarians paddled away with the gold in the end.
