First paddler to complete official Gauteng Canoe Union river race on a surfski
MEYERTON - WESTCLIFF resident Gordon Malcolm was the first paddler to complete an official Gauteng Canoe Union (GCU) river race on a surfski.
He mastered his paddling skills on a surfski, however the distance to the ocean made it difficult for him to participate in races, so he was thrilled to take the opportunity of paddling in the local river.
Malcolm finished the race in 02:03:00.
Jennie Dallas, public relations spokesperson for Gauteng Canoe Union said, “More than 100 paddlers enjoyed the mild autumn early morning chill which warmed up to the normal Gauteng Highveld temperatures. Many gained experience on the rivers and earned points towards A grade status.”
The usual class of boats in the GCU races have traditionally been recognised as K1, K2 and even K3 disciplines which are the closed kayak racing canoes accommodating one, two or three paddlers. However, with the popularity of surfski and stand-up paddling boards growing within the union, the alternative race classes are welcome to participate, Dallas said.
The river race was hosted by Florida Lake Canoe Club and ran from Meyerton to Three Rivers in Vereeniging on 24 May.
