IN PICS: Craighall Tennis Club holds its very own Wimbledon tournament
CRAIGHALL PARK – It's all tennis, and strawberries and cream at Craighall Tennis Club.
Strawberries, cream, and amazing tennis made the Wimbledon at Craighall Tennis Club as good as its namesake in London.
The courts were abuzz on 14 July as 24 players contested in doubles matches throughout the day.
The tournament’s format was a round-robin, with players swopping partners throughout so the individuals with the most games won could be crowned Wimbledon champions.
When players had breaks between matches they settled down in the clubhouse to enjoy the delicious treats and watch the Wimbledon semi-final between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, live.
It was a tennis fiesta, wherever you went.
“This is our first Wimbledon and it’s a fundraiser for the club facilities,” said tournament organiser, Debbie Fitzgibbon.
‘Everyone who plays will get a prize at the end. We will be doing this annually.”
As the matches finished off, and Djokovic finished his victory over Nadal, it was Alan Arguile and Janine Sampson who left as Wimbledon champions.
Fitzgibbon said anyone interested in playing tennis or joining Craighall Tennis Club could come through for the social tennis every Saturday afternoon.
“There is also ladies tennis at 9am every Wednesday morning, which is open to any ladies interested in tennis.”
The club is set to host its Spring Day Tournament on 1 September, which is also open to the public.
She encouraged those interested to contact the club to find out more.
