Greenside High chess player aims for global success

From school matches to dreams of facing world champion Magnus Carlsen, Greenside learner Puniya Tanje is turning passion into purpose on the chessboard.

For Grade 10 learner Puniya Tanje, chess is far more than a pastime.

It is a space where discipline, ambition, and self-belief come together, shaping both his character and his future.

At Greenside High School, Puniya has quietly built a reputation as a dedicated and thoughtful player. What began as simple curiosity has grown into a deep passion, driven by his desire to improve and challenge himself.

“I really wanted to feel inspired,” he said, reflecting on his early days with the game. “When I started playing and saw improvement, I realised I could reach a higher level.”

Encouragement from friends played a meaningful role in his journey. Their support not only strengthened his commitment to the game; it helped him find a sense of belonging. For Puniya, chess has become a positive influence, one that has allowed him to move away from negativity and focus on growth.

He draws inspiration from legendary grandmaster Bobby Fischer, whose discipline and relentless pursuit of excellence continue to motivate him. That same mindset is evident in Puniya’s own approach to the game. Beyond competition, chess has had a profound impact on his personal development. It has boosted his confidence and helped him build meaningful friendships.

More importantly, it has sharpened his critical thinking, a skill he applies in the classroom. “When I’m writing exams, I think more carefully about my answers. Chess helps me think ahead.”

Now, stepping into more competitive territory, Puniya recently entered the world of private tournaments for the first time. With the upcoming MCA Summerheat Classic on the horizon, he is eager to test himself against stronger opponents.

His goal is clear and unwavering. He wants to win. Preparation is already underway. Hours spent reading chess literature and practising at home have become part of his routine, yet, for Puniya, improvement is not just about strategy; it is about mindset. “The most important thing is to challenge yourself. If you can beat yourself, you can beat anyone.”

His ambitions stretch far beyond school competitions. Puniya dreams of one day becoming the best player in the world and competing against reigning champion Magnus Carlsen.

Looking ahead, Puniya is determined to reach master status and continue investing in his passion. Whether it is through competition, study, or simply the love of the game, he approaches each move with purpose.
