St Mary’s School, Waverley is overjoyed about its learner Nina Pieterse being selected for the Gauteng Central tennis interprovincial school team, participating in the interprovincial tournament in January 2027.

Nina won all her matches in the trials and was chosen as the number one player for the Gauteng Central U19 A team.

The tennis player expressed her gratitude for the achievement.

“One of my dreams was to represent my part of the province in a high position. I am proud of myself that I achieved this goal. Being number one for my team means the world to me. I am full of excitement and anticipation, but I am also nervous.”

Nina’s tennis journey began at a young age, but she started taking it seriously when she was 11 years old.

“I fell in love with the sport because it gives me a sense of calmness when life becomes a little bit chaotic. Tennis is not only a complex sport; it has taught me patience and resilience. I am grateful for learning these skills.”

She noted that she trains every day of the week except for Sundays, unless she is playing a tournament over the weekend.

“I train at the VHS Tennis Academy, with Rene Plant, St Mary’s head of tennis. My coaches are the main reason I have achieved this accomplishment.”

Nina concluded that she looks forward to competing against some of the best U19 girls in the country.

“It is going to be amazing tennis, and I am excited to raise my level. I am also excited for the team bonding experience, as this tournament is one of few that is actually a team experience.

I love playing tennis with my friends and cannot wait to begin this tournament next year.”
