VOICES OF JOBURG – Breaking beats

BRAAMFONTEIN – City Buzz caught up with deejay QD Hutch when we found him hanging out on Juta Street.

“I love that you can bring messages to people through your music,” said Quaid Hutchinson aka QD Hutch.

The trendy, if somewhat shy young man revealed that although he was currently a partner in an audio and visual company, he was also a part-time deejay and music producer – which is actually his passion.

“Most people just think its words to fill a song but when you really listen to it and do your homework on a deejay or producer, you can get a glimpse into their life, who they are or what they were going through in their lives when they made the track,” he said.

His deejay name, quite simply, is made up of his initials and part of his surname. “I thought it was a good idea because of the QD [cutie] thing, but it mostly brought up blank [looks] until you explained it for the third time, so nowadays I leave the wordplay to the journalists and let the music do the talking,” he laughed.

He may classify himself as a part-time deejay, but this spinner of decks has made many appearances and is the resident deejay at News Café in Rivonia on Friday nights. “I’ve played across Gauteng … everywhere from Bambu in the east, to Set in Rosebank, and as far as Ambrozio in Krugersdorp and even clubs in Pretoria.

“I left the scene to start up my company with the guy that originally gave me a shot in my amateur days. Can we give a special mention to my mentor DJ Spin and Jessica King for giving me a chance and believing in me?” he asked, flashing his big blue eyes at us. We couldn’t resist.

He was practically buzzing with excitement about his upcoming birthday bash/CD launch on 13 March. Although he hinted he couldn’t give too much away, and that he didn’t quite have a venue yet, he assured the City Buzz team that it would be “one heck of a party” and that anyone interested should keep a close eye on his Facebook page.
