90 percent local music play on SABC
JOBURG - After months of speculation, it is now official that the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) will implement what is now being called the 90 percent quota

The SABC has confirmed that they intend to play 90 percent of local music across their 18 radio stations, which also includes a stipulation regarding their television channels, effective 1 June.
Just four months ago, this information was leaked by a local newspaper who attained the information from an internal source at the SABC – information that was quickly denied by the corporation.
It was reported by Independent Online that SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago has explained that the music to be played will be pulled from all genres, with a special focus placed on gospel, kwaito, jazz, reggae, as well as local industry legends and upcoming artists.
The SABC television channels have stipulated that they will use only local music as fillers between programmes.
Trending on Twitter under two hashtags, the Johannesburg Twittersphere has met the new decisions with mixed reactions.
While some are excited about being indulged with music from our own, others have expressed concern about the quality and diversity of the music that audiences will receive.
