Artists bring the finer side of life to Zoo Lake

PARKVIEW – Zoo Lake gets decorated with fine art.

It was an all-art affair weekend recently at Zoo Lake in Parkview.

Artists Under the Sun held their Autumn Selection Weekend. Artists Under the Sun is a non-profit organisation that was started by artists with the vision of bringing fine art to the people by holding regular open-air exhibitions. Secretary of the organisation, Val Landu said their organisation has grown to be the largest outdoor fine art exhibition in southern Africa. The exhibition has been in existence for 57 years.

One of the exhibitors, Ann Inngs, said she always looks forward to their exhibition weekends as it is an opportunity to interact with fellow artists. Inngs shared that she has been an artists member for 30 years. “This is a great platform and it’s always wonderful to interact with other artists and learn from them.”

She added that being a member of this organisation has truly paid off for her as it gave her great exposure and she is now known all over the world. Her artwork is drawn from her daily experiences and she said she never limits herself. “My paintings are about everyday life. Travelling also helps with creating ideas.”

For 25-year-old Buhle Hlatswayo the story is no different. He joined the organisation last year and says the journey has been phenomenal so far. He said he was delighted when he passed the stringent selection process to be part of Artists Under the Sun. “I submitted my best work and really prayed that the judges would be impressed,” explained Hlatswayo.

Delighted to be part of the association, Hlatswayo said he is inspired to be among experienced artists. He started his painting career when he was 10 years old. “I love art because it allows you to express your feelings and also explore your creativity.” His paintings are an illustration of his personal journey and how he sees life.

Chairperson of the association, Stefan Rossouw said one of the great things about their exhibitions is that buyers can interact directly with artists.
