Win tickets to Africa Day Concert at Newtown

NEWTOWN - Celebrate Africa Day with Zonke and other African musicians.

Africa Day is celebrated annually across the continent and organisers of the Africa Day Concert want you to join in on the fun.

Africa Day falls on 25 May and Bassline in Newtown will celebrate this important day with their annual Africa Day Concert at Newtown Park on 28 May.

Managing director of Bassline and organiser of the annual Africa Day Concert, Brad Holmes, explained why this event was started in 2004.

“The main reason for holding this concert every year is because we’re just so passionate about African music and 90 percent of live African music that gets played in the city is performed in Newtown.”

The concert aims to achieve certain goals and this year it is especially important to bring the continent together, amidst the racial strife that is becoming more prevalent in the country. “Our political goal, so to speak, is to create social cohesion and our economic goal is to get people to buy African music.

“Our main goals are to popularise African music through the TV medium. The event will be broadcast on SABC2 because the only way to get people to listen to African music is to play it. We also want to celebrate African diversity.”

Some of the talented artists you can expect to hear are South Africa’s beloved Zonke, The Soil and Hagar Samir from Egypt, among others, bringing you an array of diverse music genres and sounds from across Africa.

From 4pm to 11pm, lovers of African music can bask in the park’s afternoon sunshine while enjoying the sounds of soul music from Egyptian folk, to blues and everything in between – and there is an interesting and diverse range of music to be found.

Don’t miss out on the chance to celebrate Africa Day with the rest of the country at Newtown Park, it’s set to be an evening of sheer musical pleasure.
