Touring the Constitutional Court with Justice Albie Sachs

PARKTOWN – Retired former Constitutional Court Judge will be giving a virtual tour which he developed while still in Court.

Residents are invited to a tour of the Constitutional Court on 19 September with Justice Albie Sachs.  Justice Sachs is an activist and a former judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa (1994 to 2009).

According to Johannesburg Heritage Foundation vice chairperson Flo Bird, he began practising as an advocate at the Cape Bar at the age of 21, defending people charged under the racial statutes and security laws of apartheid. After being arrested and placed in solitary confinement for over five months, Sachs went into exile in England, where he completed a PhD from Sussex University.

“In 1988, he lost his right arm and his sight in one eye when a bomb was placed in his car in Maputo, Mozambique. After the bombing, he devoted himself to the preparations for a new democratic constitution for South Africa. When he returned home from exile, he served as a member of the Constitutional Committee before being appointed a judge to the nation’s first Constitutional Court by President Nelson Mandela,” Bird shared. She added that, “Constitution Hill is the most significant heritage site in Johannesburg and indeed in South Africa and our guide was involved from the moment the site was chosen for the new court.”

The tour which will begin at 2 pm for 2.15 pm is open to all who are interested and space may be limited. Bird further reminded residents, “There is a nominal fee of R40 for fully paid up members of the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation, Forest Town, Houghton, Norwood, Oaklands, Parktown, Parkview and Westcliff associations who pay only R40. Non-members to pay R80 by EFT into The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation Account. If you have registered and paid you will receive the link on 18 September.”
