Dances of hope and unity
ROSEBANK – Rainbow Line Dancers bring united spirit to Rosebank Rooftop Market

Rainbow Line Dancers shared fun, unity and hope by demonstrating the Jerusalema dance with a Halloween theme at the Rosebank Rooftop Market on 1 November.
The group of about 30 dancers arrived dressed in black bearing scary masks as they headed to their positions moving to Michael Jackson’s Thriller. The dance then took a positive spin when they began grooving to the popular Master KG’s Jerusalema.

Crowds at the market applauded and videoed the performance before taking out their dancing shoes to join in the second rendition.
Owner of the Rainbow Line Dancers Leon Nel explained that he attended the market to show the public how much fun they can have taking part in line dancing.
“It is a safe form of exercise because we socially distance and have no contact during dances,” said Nel.

Dancer Marcelle Batista said she decided to join the group seven years ago since she hates the gym and wanted to find a form of exercise.
“Line dancing has many health benefits and a great social aspect. It’s good for the mind and body,” said Batista.
“We wanted to dance to the Jerusalema because this dance shows unity in times of Covid. The popularity of the dance has also been praised by the president as a sign of the country’s positive spirit,” she added.

Dancer Gertrude Dodgen (92) said that she joined the Rainbow Line Dancers four years ago.
Speaking to the Gazette about her decision to dance in her 90s, Dodgen said that she has stayed active her entire life and participates in multiple sporting activities during the week.
“I love dancing and the companionship involved in this group,” she said.

Nel explained that the group meets in Northcliff or on the East Rand for socially distant lessons on a weekly basis. While some participate socially, others dance at a competitive level.
