Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) posted another chart-topping retail result

According to TSAM’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Leon Theron: “In the year that Toyota is celebrating 60 years of business in South Africa, it is only fitting that we finish the year on a high.

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has posted another chart-topping retail result, leading sales in both Passenger and Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) segments in the month of November. With an aggregate of 11 892 units sold, out of the industry total of 41 588, TSAM registered a remarkable market share of 28.6%. It is the first time since October 2019 that Toyota has retailed more than 11 000 units in a single month.

In the LCV segment, Hilux was – once again – the top performer while the newly launched Corolla Cross made a strong showing in the Passenger segment. The latter registered a total of 1 757 units to help Toyota claim the lead in the Passenger category with a total of 6 962 sales. Other top performers in the group included Starlet (1 477), Agya (911), Fortuner (701), Urban Cruiser (699) and Corolla Quest (517).

According to TSAM’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Leon Theron: “In the year that Toyota is celebrating 60 years of business in South Africa, it is only fitting that we finish the year on a high. If the penultimate month of 2021 is anything to go by, we are on course to top the sales chart and ultimately celebrate 42 years of market leadership in the country. The newly launched Corolla Cross is providing a remarkable impetus to our passenger sales and we are truly thrilled that this new model has been well received by our customers.”

On the LCV front, Hilux continued to lead the way with 2 558 units sold – including 1 292 Double Cabs, 404 Xtra Cabs and 862 Single Cabs. Hiace posted 1 763 models, while Land Cruiser Pick-Up registered 229 sales. In total, Toyota retailed 4 657 units – translating to a market share of 41.7% – in the LCV segment last month.

On the luxury front, Lexus variants garnered a total of 46 sales – including 14 ES models, 12 RX and 11 UX. Hino trucks sold a total of 218 units in November, with the 500-Series registering 65 units while the 300-Series recorded 120.

According to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (naamsa): “Despite the persistent economic and COVID-19 fuelled challenges, the new vehicle market showed some resilience as its gradual recovery continued during the month. Aggregate domestic new vehicle sales in November 2021, at 41 588 units, reflected an increase of 2 573 units, or 6.6%, from the 39 015 vehicles sold in November 2020.”

To keep Toyota, Hino and Lexus vehicles in good running condition, a total of 1.4 million parts’ pieces were supplied to the domestic dealers while a further 350 000 units were shipped outside of the country.

“Despite being pleased with our year-to-date sales, we remain committed to TSAM’s long-term strategic plans built around steady and sustainable growth. So, it will be business as usual for us through to December 31 and beyond. We are grateful to the entire Toyota team and dealers across the country for their continued efforts towards making Toyota a market leader, but we cannot be complacent because there is always room for improvement.
