Brescia House’s very own karate kid
BRYANSTON – Fifteen-year-old Erin Ford scored gold for unison team kata and a silver for kata.
Holding the South Africa flag high, local Brescia House School learner Erin Ford took home the gold at the International Karate Tournament in Botswana.
Erin was one of 15 athletes selected to represent the country at the international tournament between February 25 to 27.
The 15-year-old scored gold for unison team kata and a silver for kata.
“This is my first international competition so it was great to meet other non-SA competitors and see the level of competition outside our country. I was nervous on the day of the competition but had to stay calm and focused and not let my team down. It felt really good that my training paid off,” said Erin.
She added that she has always had a great passion for karate after watching the Karate Kid movie at the age of seven.
After five years of non-stop commitment and hard work, Erin qualified for the national team. “I was ecstatic and relieved that I finally made the Protea squad and that I can represent South Africa proudly. The support of my family, coach at Fourways Martial Arts and team mates pushed me to persevere.”
The young karateka now currently has her sights set on competing in the Youth Africa Games while preparing for the Union of African Karate Federations Region South International Competition in May and her black belt grading in September.
