Marlboro carjacker gets 23 years
Bramley Police Station welcomes the conviction of a 29-year-old male who was recently sentenced to 23 years' imprisonment for carjacking and escaping lawful custody.
The Alexandra Magistrate’s Court recently convicted and sentenced 29-year-old Tebogo Mojapelo to 23 years’ imprisonment for carjacking and escaping lawful custody.
This follows Mojapelo’s arrest in October 2018 where he, along with three other men, approached and threatened a motorist while stationery along Marlboro Drive and Southway Street in Marlboro Gardens.
According to Bramley Police Station spokesperson Captain Molefe Mogodi, the victim was forced out of the vehicle and the men drove away.
“The matter was reported to the police and the docket was assigned to the Detective Sergeant Simphiwe Mbatha who deals with trio crimes.”
Majapelo was arrested on October 30, 2018 and detained for further investigation. He then escaped but was rearrested a few weeks later on November 15.
“He has since been in custody until he was convicted and sentenced by Alexander Magistrate’s Court where he was given 23 years direct imprisonment with no option of a fine. The court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm,” said Mogodi.
Bramley police management welcomed the sentence passed by the court, hoping that it serves as a deterrence to others who disregard the law.
“We also like to thank the complainant for availing herself for the duration of the court trial until the matter was finalised. [This] will also help to restore community’s trust towards our justice system.”
