Matilda makes her way to Bryanston

Bryanston High School learner Justine Sayers was more than happy to finally play her role as Matilda.

The highly anticipated rendition of the Matilda musical was brought to life by the learners and staff members of Bryanston High School.

With the outbreak of Covid-19 back in 2020, the school dubbed as ‘blue flame’ was forced to put their production for Matilda on hold. Two years later, parents and guests were all welcomed to the official opening night of the show on August 10.

The performance which took six months to prepare had audiences laughing, crying and even cheering for the malicious antagonist, Miss Trunchbull, played by the talented Theodore Ghorbany. With the helpful guidance from Ashleigh Venter (director), each performer had their golden opportunity to display some magic on the stage which connected with the viewers.

The show also featured a live band performance conducted by Michele de Klerk and a magnificent stage crew who all made the production spectacular.

The story follows a young girl named Matilda Wormwood who struggles to connect with her family due to their disinterest in books and stories. She later discovers her telekinetic abilities while experiencing some hardships at school with a mean-spirited teacher. Spoiler alert – it has a beautiful ending.

Live music was perfectly in sync with each scene and the tone of the show. One of the biggest highlights of the show was a flashback scene where Matilda shared a story with Miss Phelps, played by Sindisiwe Nkomo. The effect was all made possible with a projector, great lighting and delivery.

Matilda, who was played by Justine Sayers, owned the stage with her expressions and dialogues. “One of our biggest challenges was having a new cast because some of our original cast members from 2020 graduated. I am very happy with everyone’s performance tonight. We were all in the same page and it was fun. I am grateful that I got the chance to finally live the moment,” said Sayers.

During the curtain call, parents and guests clapped and cheered with high energy.
