Ring the bell for gender equality at Sandton

Striking chords of change and the urgency for gender equality in the 21st century were discussed at the JSE.

Ringing the bell for gender equality is a powerful metaphorical gesture that symbolises the call for equal opportunities, rights, and representation for people of all genders.

In celebration of International Women’s Day (IWD), the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) and the Motsepe Foundation hosted an Opening Bell for Gender Equality event.

The bell-ringing ceremonies are designed to spotlight the critical influence of the private sector in promoting gender equality, contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, and enhancing awareness of the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs).

This one was a reminder to all women to break down barriers and challenge stereotypes that may limit them based on their gender.

The event aimed at promoting gender equality, which is essential for creating a fair and just society where everyone can thrive and contribute to their fullest potential, regardless of gender.

The panel discussion consisted of Busisiwe Mavuso, CEO of Business Leadership South Africa; Karabo Motaung, Principal Analyst, Advocacy and Stakeholder Relations for the Competition Commission; Namhla Mniki-Mangaliso, Senior Executive in the Presidency; and Itumeleng Monale, Chief Operating Officer at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

The discussion included the struggle for social equality, economic equality, and its implications and challenges to equality.

Mavuso said, “Despite progress in various areas, obstacles to achieving equality persist, including cultural attitudes, systemic biases, and resistance to change as hindrances to creating a more equitable society.”

She added that the key battle for equality has been the ongoing struggle for gender equality.

“The equality ring plays a pivotal role in this fight by challenging traditional gender norms as it symbolises a commitment to dismantling stereotypes surrounding masculinity and femininity, fostering a society where individuals are free to express themselves authentically, irrespective of societal expectations.”
