Crawford Sandton’s Kiran Moodley lights up Johannesburg People’s Theatre

Navigating the challenges of the stage, Kiran emphasises the importance of attention to detail and overcoming nerves.

In the bustling world of the Johannesburg People’s Theatre, a young star is shining bright.

Kiran Moodley, a Grade 5 learner at Crawford International Sandton Preparatory, has taken on the lead role of Pinocchio in Disney’s My Son Pinocchio.

His stellar performance has not only captured the hearts of audiences but also garnered immense pride from his school community, with Grade 5 learners sallying to support him at the show.

Reflecting on his journey, Kiran shares his passion for acting, which started with a spark ignited during a visit to watch Shrek, the musical.

“I have always enjoyed acting and drama, and seeing other children having fun on stage made me realise I could do it too.”

He added that he nudged his parents to explore avenues for him to pursue his newfound passion.

Transitioning from spectator to performer, Kiran recalls his first steps onto the set of Disney’s My Son Pinocchio, with a mix of nerves and excitement.

“I was nervous but very excited to see the set and get started.”

Speaking to Kiran, one could see his enthusiasm for the craft as it shines through his face while describing the joy of performing on stage.

“I love entertaining the audience, and I do not have a specific actor that I look up to, but I found my inspiration in my co-stars, particularly Lesedi, who portrays the fox in the show.”

Kiran elaborated that Lesedi’s dedication to acting despite challenges is admirable.

“He is good at playing different characters, which motivates me to improve.”

He said that balancing school and acting has been a demanding feat for him.

“Late-night study sessions have become the norm as I juggle schoolwork with memorising lines and choreography, and it has been difficult, but it has taught me discipline and hard work.”

Kiran explained that looking ahead, he hopes to continue honing his craft while indulging in his other passions, including drawing, gaming, reading, and karate.

“Work hard and do not give up. A quote I remind myself of every day is that success does not come in an elevator; you have to climb the stairs.”
