Brescia House students get a real taste of business
Brescia House School Grade 9 learners took on the challenge of running their own businesses during the school’s annual market day.
The spirit of entrepreneurship was alive and well at Brescia House School, as Grade 9 learners transformed the school grounds into a colourful, bustling marketplace for the annual market day.
The event, on September 10, a key component of the Grade 9 business studies curriculum, gave students the chance to apply theoretical knowledge in a hands-on, exciting way.
Under the guidance of the business studies department, learners stepped into the shoes of real-world business professionals, taking on roles such as general, marketing, financial, and production managers.

They developed their own business ideas, built teams, designed marketing strategies, and managed their own stall operations, all while using Brescia Bucks, the school’s very own currency, to conduct transactions.

From sweet and savoury snacks to cool drinks and handmade goods, the variety on offer this year was exceptional.
Stalls included everything from sweets and drinks to braai plates, handmade bracelets, and cooling treats perfect for the warm weather.

Despite challenges, such as unpredictable weather and the natural ups and downs of working in teams, students showed resilience and adaptability, key traits for any budding entrepreneur.
The school’s business studies HOD Nozinhlanhla Sikhakhane said: “The whole purpose of market day is to really get the children to step into the role of an entrepreneur.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for them to put into practice what they’ve been learning in class. From handling unexpected weather conditions to resolving group disagreements, they gain so much more than just business experience; they learn life skills.”

A unique aspect of the event is its built-in focus on corporate social responsibility. Learners are taught that business isn’t only about profit; it’s also about purpose.
As part of this ethos, 10% of each team’s earnings are donated to the UpSchool Legacy Project, a long-standing partner organisation focused on sustainability and community upliftment.
“Entrepreneurship is not just about making money. We want our students to understand the value of giving back. The community supports them, and they, in turn, should support their community. “The remainder of the proceeds are shared among the students in recognition of their capital investment and effort.”
