Redhill School head of cricket to lead Central Gauteng Lions at U16 Cricket National Week
With a passion for mentorship and a sharp eye for potential, Redhill School’s Eugene Petersen is set to represent Central Gauteng Lions as assistant coach at the 2025 Cricket South Africa U16 National Week, bringing his values-driven coaching style to one of the country’s top youth tournaments.
Redhill School’s head of cricket Eugene Petersen has been officially appointed as the assistant coach of the Central Gauteng Lions (CGL) U16A team for the upcoming Cricket South Africa U16 National Week, to be held in Paarl, Cape Town, from December 9 to 14.
A respected figure in the school and provincial cricketing circles, Petersen also takes on the significant responsibility of selector for the schools U16 side, reinforcing his growing influence in youth cricket development in the province.
“It’s a huge honour and a privilege,” Petersen said. “Being trusted with the development of some of the most promising young cricketers in the province is something I don’t take lightly. It’s humbling to be recognised in this way.

Petersen’s journey into coaching was born from a lifelong love for the game and a natural inclination toward mentorship. “As a player, I was always fascinated by the strategic and mental aspects of cricket. Eventually, I realised that my greatest passion wasn’t just playing the game, but helping others grow through it.”
That commitment to development has guided his steady rise in the coaching ranks, culminating in his latest provincial role. Petersen’s coaching philosophy is firmly grounded in values such as discipline, respect, accountability, and continuous improvement. While competitive success is certainly part of the goal, Petersen sees character development as equally vital.
“Winning is important, but it should never come at the cost of the values we want to instil. Effort, attitude, and respect are non-negotiable, and those qualities often lead to success anyway.”
He is known for his ability to spot hidden potential. “Talent isn’t always flashy; it can be quiet resilience, game awareness, or a willingness to learn.”
The Cricket SA U16 National Week is one of the premier youth cricket tournaments in South Africa, and Petersen is clear on what he hopes to achieve with the squad. “Our goal is to compete with intensity, play smart cricket, and represent Central Gauteng Lions with pride. Beyond that, I want each player to leave the week having grown in confidence, skill, and understanding of the game.”
Throughout his career, Petersen has been shaped by mentors who believed in him, even when he did not believe in himself. “They taught me the value of preparation, empathy, and resilience. Their belief in personal connection has deeply shaped how I coach today.”

It’s a gift he now aims to pass on to his players.
His guiding mantra: ‘Progress over perfection’, reflects a commitment to daily improvement, patience, and embracing the process. “Success doesn’t happen overnight. If we focus on improving a little every time we step onto the field, we’ll eventually achieve big things.”
Petersen’s appointment not only speaks volumes about his personal capabilities; it also reflects positively on Redhill School’s growing reputation in the cricketing landscape.
His influence continues to inspire young athletes, both on and off the field. “Whether they go on to play professionally or not, the values and habits they build here can serve them for life. Above all, I want them to enjoy the game and believe in themselves.”
