R21m dagga bust in Sandton as MMC leads operation

A tip-off led JMPD’s Tactical Response Unit to a Sandton storage facility where dagga worth R21m was seized.

A breakthrough against organised crime was made in Sandton on October 2, when Johannesburg’s MMC for Public Safety, Dr Mgcini Tshwaku, led a decisive raid that uncovered dagga worth an estimated R21m.

Working with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s Tactical Response Unit (TRU), Tshwaku and the team swooped on a storage facility in Limbro Park following a tip-off. The consignment, allegedly being kept for large-scale commercial distribution, was seized during the operation.

Two suspects were arrested on the scene, and the recovered dagga was booked at Sandringham Police Station.

Authorities confirmed that the evidence has been handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for urgent follow-up investigations.

Speaking after the raid, Tshwaku said the operation was a clear message to criminal networks that Johannesburg would not be a safe ground for drug syndicates.

“This bust strikes at the heart of organised crime, cutting off criminal networks that profit from destroying communities. Johannesburg is drawing a firm line that drug syndicates will find no haven in this city.”

The multimillion-rand seizure is one of the city’s largest recent dagga busts and comes amid a broader crackdown on organised criminal activity.
