Sandown Road reinstatement works progressing steadily

The JRA targets October 30 for the completion of the Sandown Road reinstatement.

Reinstatement works at the busy Pretoria Avenue and Katherine Street intersection in Sandown are progressing well, with the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) confirming that practical completion is expected by October 30, weather permitting.

According to Khayalethu Gqibitole, JRA’s head of department for regional operations, the rock fill pioneer layer has been completed, and teams are now installing subsoil drainage pipes to improve water management and ensure long-term structural integrity.

“The pioneer layer stabilises the subgrade and drains groundwater. It’s protected by a geotextile membrane that filters out fine particles and contaminants, meaning the new drainage system will not require maintenance during its design lifespan.”

He added that the engineering intervention follows damage caused by a major water pipe leak, which required Joburg Water excavations in the area.

“It’s important to clarify that this was not a road collapse. JRA is reinstating the road to standard after Joburg Water’s repair works.”

Gqibitole confirmed that Pretoria Avenue between Rivonia Road and Katherine Street remains closed for the duration of construction, and motorists are advised to use alternative. routes.

“To ensure public safety, the site is fenced off with clear signage, and pedestrians are advised to avoid the demarcated area. The project, fully funded by Joburg Water, is being closely monitored by both entities to ensure efficient use of funds.”
