Bryanston parkrun place of honour for late Olympian and parkrunner

The run in Bryanston carried deep emotion as the Sisonke Sisters group ran in memory of their late teammate, Shirene Human, a beloved parkrunner and Olympian.

The Bryanston parkrun carried special significance this morning, as members of the Sisonke Sisters, a breast cancer awareness group, took part in honour of their late sister Shirene Human.

Human, a passionate parkrunner and accomplished figure skater, passed away on October 7 after a courageous battle with breast cancer that had metastasised to her lungs.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Loraika Pillay shared an emotional tribute.

“Today we’re running in honour of one of our sisters who passed away this week. Shirene was an avid parkrunner and a figure skater who represented South Africa at the 1998 Olympics.

She was really looking forward to completing her 100th parkrun but managed 87 before her passing.

All she wanted was to get out of the hospital bed and reach that milestone, so we’re doing this in honour of her.”

The Sisonke Sisters, dressed in pink, were joined by hundreds of fellow runners who paused for a moment of reflection before the start.

The event saw an extraordinary turnout this morning, with more than a thousand participants lacing up for the weekly 5km event.

From first-time runners and seasoned athletes to families with children and dogs in tow, the morning’s atmosphere was one of unity, energy, and remembrance.

Run director John Stobbs expressed his excitement at the strong turnout and the spirit of togetherness.

“We’ve had a great turnout today, more than a thousand people, about a hundred more than usual.

The weather’s been perfect, and it’s wonderful to see so many people coming out, whether they’re running, walking, or supporting a great cause.”
