Road closures in Gauteng this weekend: Joburg north roads to avoid

Find out what alternative routes you can take ahead of the Joburg north and surrounds road closures this weekend.

Motorists across Gauteng are advised to prepare for temporary road closures, lane restrictions, and intermittent disruptions this weekend as authorities implement a large-scale joint traffic operation ahead of the G20 Leaders’ Summit.

The coordinated operation, led by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) in partnership with the Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP), Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD), and the South African Police Service (SAPS), will take place on October 24 and October 25.

Don’t forget about the road closures for the Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg on October 26.

According to the RTMC, the exercise will focus on high-security routes connecting Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Ekurhuleni, and is to ensure the safe and efficient movement of delegates during the high-profile summit.

The operation will impact the following metropolitan areas:

• City of Johannesburg
• City of Tshwane
• City of Ekurhuleni

Key highways and arterial routes expected to face temporary closures include:

N1, N3, N12, M1, R21, R24, and R512, as well as several inner-city roads such as Rivonia Road, Grayston Drive, Oxford Road, Jan Smuts Avenue, Rand Show Road, Nasrec Road, and the Golden Highway.

Sandton and Rosebank:

In Sandton and Rosebank, motorists should also anticipate restrictions along 5th Street, Maude Street, Daisy Street, Whiteley Road, Melrose Boulevard, Corlett Drive, Athol Oaklands Road, Glenhove Road, and surrounding routes.

Operation schedule:
• Friday, October 24: Rolling closures from 09:00 to 13:00 across Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni.
• Saturday, October 25: Morning operation: 08:00 to 10:00, Afternoon operation: 13:00 to 14:30, Focused on Johannesburg’s core traffic networks.

Alternative routes

To minimise delays, motorists are urged to use:
• M57 instead of the R21 between Johannesburg and Pretoria.
• Beyers Naudé Drive as an alternative to the R512 or N1 for west/northwest travel.
• Smaller regional roads through Germiston, Kempton Park, or Bedfordview rather than the R24/N12 for east-west travel.
• Side streets parallel to Jan Smuts Avenue, Oxford Road, Rivonia Road, Corlett Drive, Sandton Drive, and 11th Avenue in Sandton, Rosebank, and Parktown.
• In southern Johannesburg, areas such as Riverlea, Nasrec, and Ormonde View should use Chris Hani Road, Main Reef Road, Crownwood Road, and Soweto Highway.

Motorists are strongly encouraged to plan, allow extra travel time, and follow real-time traffic updates during the operation period. Clear signage and traffic officers will be deployed across affected areas, with emergency and essential services prioritised at all times.
