A veteran athlete, Gary Katzen from Sandton, said, “Seeing local lifters perform at this level was incredible. It’s one thing to hear about strength sports internationally, but to watch athletes from our own communities lift on the world stage was truly special.”
Among the standout performances were Kobus Bester, Elrens Heck, Bobby Krisch, and Jean Paul van Wyk. “These athletes worked tirelessly for years to reach this point,” Katzen added.
“Their discipline, focus, and sheer arm strength were remarkable. The fact that some of them set world records here in Durban is something the Sandton community can be extremely proud of.”
Katzen, who has competed internationally across four different strength disciplines, including bodybuilding, powerlifting, arm-wrestling, and curl competitions, reflected on what makes Strict Arm and Freestanding Curl unique.

“These disciplines are pure tests of strength. The Strict Arm Curl requires perfect form with no movement at all, while the Freestanding Curl adds balance and stability. Both demand precision, discipline, and mental focus, qualities these local athletes clearly possess.”
The championship was held alongside the World Powerlifting Congress World Championships, adding an extra layer of excitement and international recognition.
“Having the event in Durban, on a world-class stage, allowed local lifters to not only compete but shine among the best in the world. The energy, camaraderie, and support for each lift were truly electric.”
He also praised the training and dedication of the local athletes. “I’ve seen firsthand the effort it takes to compete at this level. From hours of specialised training to perfecting every curl and lift, these athletes embody dedication. Their achievements here are a testament to their commitment and the growing strength sports community in South Africa.”
With the inaugural championship completed, local lifters have firmly placed themselves on the global map of Strict Arm and Freestanding Curl.
“This is just the beginning. We hope these achievements inspire more young athletes to take up the sport and continue building South Africa’s reputation in the global strength community.”
