Pretoria Avenue and Katherine Street intersection misses completion deadline
The February 6 reopening date has passed, but visible progress on site suggests the long-running project is nearing completion.
The intersection at Pretoria Avenue and Katherine Street has not reopened by its planned completion date of February 6.
The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) previously indicated that the project was expected to reach practical completion by that date, subject to favourable weather conditions. However, the deadline has passed, and work is still underway.

By February 12, fresh tar had been laid along the roadway, and construction teams were actively working on the site. The surface appears largely complete, with only final touches remaining.
Yellow barriers remain in place, while finishing work continues along sections of the road and pavements. Workers were seen compacting parts of the newly laid surface, suggesting preparations are being made ahead of reopening.

JRA had earlier stated that the remaining work included road surfacing, installation of a manhole cover, kerb inlet slabs, road markings, and site clearance.

Inclement weather was cited as the primary risk to meeting the original deadline, as certain tasks cannot be carried out in wet conditions.
Although the missed deadline may frustrate motorists and nearby businesses who have endured months of disruption, visible progress on February 12 indicates that reopening may not be far off.
At the time of publication, JRA had not responded to requests for comment. Any response received will be published in a follow-up report.
