Girls’ team captain Leila Asciondee Coetzee said the tournament was significant because it was the first time the team had consistently found its rhythm and worked together throughout the competition. “I think it’s taken us a long time to actually gel as a team, but this is the first tournament that we’ve actually been able to work together, like consistently throughout the entire tournament.

“We fought very hard. The other teams put up a very good fight. It was just positive mentality that had to keep us going.”

She added that the final tested the team’s composure, after the players became nervous and lost a set, but they managed to recover and finish strong. “There was a moment where we kind of started to slow down, or got a bit nervous, and we lost the set, but then in the end, it all worked out.”

The team’s success was further recognised through a number of individual awards. Leila Coetzee was named Best Setter, while Riley Pearman received the Best Receiver award. Tatum Ramdhani was named Best Attacker, with Muyatwa Muyunda taking both Best Blocker and Most Valuable Player. Qays Saleh was named Best Defender.
