A pink cookbook for the summer

50 per cent of all proceeds of sales of the cookbook will go to Pink Drive until 15 November.

Moms and kids often have things in common and one of them is the love for food.

Home-cook mother of three Jan Kohler wanted to bring these two together with her cookbook Pink Gin and Fairy Cakes.

She said that the idea was born from her love for entertaining. “I have always just loved entertaining, never mind cooking! I guess it started with play dates and matured into parties.
“There would always be fairy cakes early on and from about 4pm when the moms came around, probably pink gins. With this book I want to show worlds collide with mom’s and kiddies coming together.”

Kohler added that the idea was initially spurred on by her friends and that’s how Pink Gin and Fairy Cakes came to be.

“They wouldn’t let up until I did it and everyone kept asking me for recipes. Eventually, they said, ‘Agh, come on just put it in a book for us.”

Growing a keen passion for it, Kohler said that she thoroughly enjoyed this journey and would like to motivate other women to follow their passions.

Self-published, Kohler took the risk and was fortunate enough to have the support she needed.

“It was wonderful to do – previously, I was a graphic designer so it had a lot of personal touches and I had a lot of fun with it!”

Now in conjunction with Porcupine Press, 50 per cent of all proceeds of sales of the cookbook will go to Pink Drive until 15 November.

“I think that cancer awareness in SA is very important for all women. Unfortunately, in our societies, there is not enough reach. Pink Drive does amazing work and that is why I want to especially support them. This being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I thought it would be great to give back.”

She said that as her children grow older the more time she has on her hands.

“I will continue to cook and share my journey through blogging and social media. Of course, I would like what I’m doing in the food industry I think it’s very exciting and I want to pursue it.”
