Get all your essentials in one box

The journey has been a meaningful one, we have partnered with so many people in the country to create a much-needed conversation.

The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted a number of underlying issues in the country.
Many people have lost their jobs and income during this time. Business owner and Rivonia resident, Mamahlatse Marokane was affected until she conjured up a plan to make an income.

“I have faced quite a few challenges, the lockdown gave me time to think about solutions to making a living. The aim, however, was not just about making a living but making an impact as well,” she said.

And that’s when she came up with her innovative idea, LadyBox SA – a period subscription box that offers essential period supplies, delivered straight to your door.

“There was a woman on Twitter and she would complain every month about period pain and menstrual-related problems. She would always wish for an all-in-one package delivered straight to her door to solve these problems. I felt like that was a sign for me because I’ve been thinking about starting and I just never did.”

From that tweet she started the product in April this year.

“At first I was really surprised at the reception of the product. I wanted to address menstrual health issues and period poverty as well because we have that problem in South Africa. The journey has been a meaningful one, we have partnered with so many people in the country to create the much-needed conversation.”

With giving back in mind, Marokane makes it her mission to host a ‘pad run’ every quarter.

“I partnered with an NGO which gives out pads to girls in school in 2018. So what I did with LadyBox SA was use the contacts I already have to call on my friends and corporates to get involved. With the situation so dire, we try to try reach as many girls as possible.”

Determined to keep the conversation going, Marokane wants to clear the stigma around menstruation in the country.

“I want people to associate LadyBox SA with period positivity. Talking openly about periods and making ensuring that these conversations are had all the time. First timers need to know and understand what their mind and bodies go through in this time so period education is key.”

There are five LadyBoxes on offer from their website and prices range from R250 to R380.

“Two of our boxes are dedicated to teenage girls who are still yet to get their period and ones that already have it. There is also a guidance handbook breaking down what happens to their body during a period.”
