Artistic swimming on the rise in Sandton

Many first-time performers are given a platform to show their progress in artistic swimming.

Team Phoenix held an artistic swimming show day at Brescia House on November 11 to show the hard work that goes into the sport.

A total of six clubs and swim schools took part in the event. Eldos Golden Dolphins and Sandton Swim School joined Team Phoenix, Brescia House School, Cosmo Dolphins, and Swimming with Alta in participating.

“Our first event in March this year was attended by 40 new young athletes; we have 63 athletes attending today an increase of 50%,” said Dave Drinkwater, who manages Team Phoenix. “Show days are important for these young athletes as they provide an opportunity away from the pressure of competition to be able to show their skills and express themselves doing a sport they love.”

Drinkwater also said that having South Africa’s top youth and senior swimmers like Jessica Hayes-Hill and Laura Stugnell showing their higher-level routines encourages the young athletes to put in the time and work to achieve their goals.

“Days like today are also about inspiring,” Drinkwater concluded. “Team Phoenix is committed to growing the sport of artistic swimming and delighted to be hosting our second show day this year.”
