Police arrest Buccleuch resident for assault

A member of the group of residents who paid a neighbour a house call on February 13, has been arrested by police.

A Buccleuch resident has been arrested by Sandton police on February 16, for assault and malicious damage to property.

This follows the community making a house call to a neighbour on February 13, to raise concerns over the adult-content webcam operation he is operating from the house where they are renting.

“What we have on record is that a 41-year-old man was arrested and charged with malicious damage to property,” said Johannesburg district police spokesperson Captain Jeff Phora. “The suspect, together with a group of other suspects, entered the complainant’s premises and assaulted him, and damaged his property.

“The complainant also lodged a complaint at the provincial office,” Phora continued. “Detectives that were conducting suspect tracing operations traced and arrested the suspect this morning in Buccleuch.”

Phora also confirmed that the complainant, being out on bail, had also been arrested on February 2, when police were reacting to information regarding drug dealing received from the Buccleuch community.

“Primary police investigation so far state that there seems to be tensions between the Buccleuch community and the complainant, which resulted in the current assault and malicious damage to property case,” said Phora. “The Community Policing Forum (CPF) and police are currently engaging the community regarding the incident, and police have condemned the community for taking the law into their own hands, as a result condoning vigilantism.

“Together with the CPF, police will be conducting further searches of the complainant’s residence to prevent any drug dealing or illegal activity from occurring,” Phora concluded.

The Sandton Community Policing Forum (CPF)’s spokesperson Roshan Byinal indicated on February 19, that the CPF could not give feedback on the matter at this time.

“We cannot comment on an open, on-going investigation,” Byinal said.
