Rivonia loves sporty Mondays
The various ways in which Rivonia serves Sandton locals looking to maintain their weekly fitness goals.
While some people are eager to curl up in bed and sleep at the end of any given Monday, patrons of the Rivonia Recreational Club choose to unwind in more active ways.
This was seen on March 25 when guests utilised the tennis and padel courts as well as the martial arts studio for jodo and iaido.
On the padel courts, the duo of Raul Flores and Adele Milana faced off against the team of Mike Niemand and Niki Neave, who won the game 2–1 in sets.
“We play on various days of the week and weekend at any club that is available at the times we want to play,” said Milana. “Mike and Niki won overall by winning the first and third sets, and we only won the second set.”
On the tennis courts, Sirianna Santacrose was deep into her second match against Leana Schoeman.
In the martial arts studio, James Miller and Heinz Weilert were the first to arrive for jodo practice. Miller explained, “In the martial art of jodo, during training, we break it into three specific areas – basic movements, the second one is basic movements with a partner, and the third one is a set series of more complicated movements.”
Weilert concluded by sharing what drew him to learning the art of wielding a short-staff.
“I was looking for a sport I could do towards the end of my physical capacity,” Weilert said of how he came to fall in love with the staff-based Japanese martial arts. “I was looking for something with longevity where you never stop learning.”
