Montrose Night Challenge comes to a close with carnival-like atmosphere

The Montrose Primary School Night Challenge closed on a high note, surrounded by echoes of cheers and delight as the winning teams, Bryandale Primary School in netball and Rivonia Primary School in cricket, were crowned.

The U11 Montrose night cricket and netball challenge came to a carnival-like conclusion at Montrose Primary School in Parkmore, where a number of school teams from across Johannesburg North played off for their schools’ esteem as the best in either sporting code.

Matches were played every Friday afternoon from October 11–November 8, when the school hosted the respective opening and closing ceremonies.

Chippa Mavericks’ goal scorer Nonhle Masiu gained crucial experience, along with her team, at this year’s tournament.

A highlight from this year was the inclusion of a developmental netball team from Soweto. Montrose Primary’s Ronel Sauer celebrated how the team from Johannesburg South came to be a part of their school’s sport tournament this year.

“This is their first tournament. They’re a collective of Soweto school players who come together on a Sunday,” Sauer reflected. “One of our umpires asked us if there was space for them. When a school withdrew in the last minute, we got them in.”

Dainfern College’s goal scorer Adele Venter was a machine on the court as she scored hoops.

Sauer also celebrated how the girls from Chippa Mavericks became the recipients of a special reward from the parents at Dainfern College.

Grayston Prep goal scorer Sienna Pestanna puts her team back on the scoreboard against Dainfern College.

“The Chippa Mavericks development team from Soweto received a donation from Dainfern College parents of a pair of tackies for each girl on their team.”

The closing ceremony was an exciting ensemble including an awesome troupe of performers, accompanied by parachutists falling from the skies with style.

Grimace and the DP Wanderers Lion were super popular among their fans at the tournament.
