Critical juncture in restoration of Sandton water
Welding and restoration work is set to begin, as JW isolates key infrastructure to ensure safe conditions on-site.
A worsening water infrastructure crisis in Sandton has left over 12 000 properties across five wards without a consistent water supply, sparking widespread frustration among residents and businesses.
The issue centres on ongoing repair work along Pretoria Avenue, where Johannesburg Water (JW) is attempting to restore a critical valve chamber believed to be nearly 80 years old.

Despite multiple efforts, including three major repair attempts, the project has been plagued by delays due to poor planning, equipment shortages, and on-site technical challenges.

According to the two local councillors, Lynda Shackelford, of Ward 103, and Andrew Stewart, of Ward 91, the latest disruptions occurred over the recent holiday period, overlapping with Workers’ Day, and school breaks, leaving many residents without water and no prior warning or timeline for restoration.
“Initial reports referred to the problem as a simple pipe issue, but it was later revealed to involve a failing chamber, causing further confusion and distrust.”

Shackelford added that technical complications have also slowed progress. “Excavation teams encountered saturated, unstable soil beneath the water table, requiring the rerouting of utility cables and the use of river sand to stabilise the site. Pretoria Avenue remains an active construction zone, with officials urging motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area.”

JW spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala announced progress on the evening of May 11, including the successful removal of a clamp to release residual water from the system. “Water pressure has now been reduced to a manageable level, and we are preparing for the next phase of repairs.”
She added that the welding and restoration work is expected to begin on May 12, while the Illovo reservoir and tower will stay isolated to ensure safe working conditions, meaning further supply disruptions are likely. “Temporary water tankers and alternative supply measures have been deployed, but many residents remain sceptical, citing JW’s past failures in delivering reliable services or timely updates.”
