Pikitup outlines festive season services, urges residents to report gift-soliciting staff

Waste collection will continue throughout the holiday season, barring Christmas Day.

Pikitup, the waste management company of the City of Johannesburg, will continue normal waste collection and related services throughout the December holiday period, except for Christmas Day, December 25.

The entity will operate as usual on December 16, December 26 and January 1, 2026.

Pikitup has, however, noted with concern that some employees continue to request Christmas gifts from residents despite a clear organisational policy prohibiting this behaviour. The company has received several complaints from communities across its 12 operational depots, reporting that staff have been knocking on doors and pressuring residents for festive ‘gifts’.

Pikitup strongly condemns this conduct and reminds both employees and the public that soliciting or accepting gifts from residents is strictly against company policy.

Residents are urged to assist by reporting any incidents of gift solicitation. To do so, they should note the registration number of the compactor truck involved and report the matter to the Pikitup call centre on 010 055 5990 or 087 357 1068.

The entity is also appealing to households likely to generate excess waste during the festive season to make use of Pikitup’s integrated waste management facilities for safe and responsible disposal. A full list of these sites — including their addresses, operating hours, and the types and quantities of waste accepted — is available on the Pikitup website.
