Better Bryanston shows what’s possible for communities in Johannesburg
Bea Campbell-Cloete calls on residents to help reclaim their neighbourhoods.
Johannesburg’s suburbs are visibly deteriorating, and residents see it every day.
Bea Campbell-Cloete, the DA candidate for Ward 102, points to overgrown verges, blocked storm water systems, illegal dumping, and unmanaged open spaces as growing problems across the city. “These spaces are slowly becoming unsafe, unhealthy, and neglected.”
According to Campbell-Cloete, the impact goes far beyond appearance. “This affects health, safety, the environment, and property values. Unfortunately, the City of Johannesburg does not seem able to keep up with even basic maintenance.”

In recent weeks, however, she said communities have shown that things do not have to stay this way. “We are seeing powerful examples of what can be done when residents step in and take ownership of their neighbourhoods.”
One such example is Better Bryanston. “This initiative shows how community action can bring real and lasting change. Through clean-ups, verge clearing, and reporting infrastructure problems, residents are restoring their area.”
She acknowledges that this situation is not ideal. “It is not acceptable that communities should be doing work they already pay for, but the reality is that people can no longer sit back while conditions worsen and risks increase.”

Campbell-Cloete explained that the difference between suburbs with active community groups and those without them is clear. “Where residents are organised, areas are cleaner, safer, and better cared for. These initiatives help bridge the gap and often speed up responses from city entities. More importantly, they restore pride in our suburbs.”
She encourages residents to get involved. “Join or support local initiatives, residents’ associations, and clean-up drives. Work with your ward councillor and escalate issues.
“We can reclaim our suburban spaces. Together, we can make them safe, clean, and welcoming again.”
