Bryanston reels from spike in criminality

Sandton CPF shared crime statistics recorded within the Sector 2 region in September through minutes from their latest meeting.

The Sandton Sector 2 Community Policing Forum (CPF) supplied feedback from their October 5 meeting. The feedback comprises a Sandton police Sector 2 crime analysis dated September 7, until October 3; a JMPD monthly report comprising crimes in September; and minutes from the Sector 2 meeting for October.

The station’s crime analysis revealed house robberies and theft out of motor vehicles as the dominating crimes in the sector. Bryanston and Riverclub have been identified as the most problematic suburbs regarding house robberies.

Bryanston is also cited as having experienced the most residential burglaries in September between the hours of 06:00 to 08:59, as well as between 18:00 and 20:59 on a Tuesday and Sunday. Furthermore, Bryanston, Paulsof and Petervale are listed as where most incidents of theft out of motor vehicles are reported.

Grosvenor and Hobart streets in Bryanston and Witkoppen Road in Paulshof are hotspots to take note of.

The report concludes with a note about a single robbery with a firearm that took place on October 1, at the Total garage on Hobart Road in Bryanston. The suspect was a male wearing a balaclava and driving a blue BMW with an unknown registration number.

From the JMPD report on Sector 2, 331 stop and searches were conducted between September 1–22. From these, 215 vehicles and 378 persons were searched, with 163 citations issued in total.

In September, JMPD attended to three noise complaints; issued citations to taxis found operating an illegal taxi rank at Winnie Mandela and Ballyclare drives and impounded perishable goods on three occasions. JMPD also dispatched patrols to Rivonia and Witkoppen roads, as well as Winnie Mandela Drive, in an effort to prevent criminal activities.

A total of 17 accidents were reported across Sector 2 in September, and one arrest was made on September 9, for drunken driving and negligence on the road at the intersection of Bowling Avenue and Lotus Street.

The next Sector 2 CPF meeting is expected to take place virtually at 18:00 on November 2.
