Community backs charity sports tournament

The community turned out in full force at Old Parks Sports Club to support Tom Sundawo’s fundraiser tournament, raising money for his monthly rent.

Old Parks Sports Club was buzzing with energy and community spirit, as residents gathered in numbers to support Tom Sundawo’s annual 5-a-side soccer and netball fundraiser.

The tournament, now a yearly highlight, helps raise funds for Sundawo’s rent at the Ann Harding Cheshire Home, where he lives. Sundawo, who was left paraplegic after being shot during an armed robbery at work, relies on these events to help cover his R4 500 monthly rent.

“This all started as a friendly game between friends,” Sundawo explained. “Then, when they found out I was struggling with rent, they decided to turn it into a fundraiser. It’s been growing since then.”

The day offered something for everyone: soccer, netball, good food, music, and an exciting auction with items up for grabs. A cash bar was available, and Sundawo himself served up tasty boerewors rolls, hot off the braai.

The soccer tournament saw These Guys take home first place, followed by Teabags FC in second, and FSF in third. In the netball division, KGC1 claimed the top spot, with KGC2 finishing second, and The Goats securing third.

From beginners to seasoned players, everyone was welcome to take part, and many businesses also entered teams, using the event as a fun team-building activity.

Sundawo said the funds raised would go directly to his rent and thanked the community for their support. “It means so much to me. I hope everyone had a great time. That’s really what it’s all about, having fun and supporting each other.”

The event proved, once again, how sports can bring people together for a good cause.
