Water restored for most of Joburg following Rand Water shutdown

Relief has come for residents dealing with dry taps and low water pressure following the conclusion of Rand Water’s scheduled maintenance.

Water is gradually returning to taps across Johannesburg after Rand Water completed scheduled maintenance on its Palmiet system earlier this week. Johannesburg Water (JW) confirmed that supply has resumed in most areas, though some communities are still experiencing delays as systems recover.

The major maintenance operation ended on June 3. Since concluding the maintenance project, the entity has been working to stabilise its own infrastructure through several measures to speed up water systems recovery, including water throttling and the temporary closure of specific outlets.

While the majority of affected systems have shown improvement, and are now supplying water consistently, some residents in Alexander Park, Grand Central, and President Park may continue to face low pressure or intermittent outages. According to JW, this is because those reservoirs were already low before maintenance work began, making recovery more difficult.

Despite some challenges, many residents can now expect water in their taps.

“Direct feeds have stabilised and are supplying fairly. The restoration process of critically low systems will be gradual and could take up to two to three days to recover,” said the water utility in a statement.

For those without water, tankers will remain in service until full supply is restored.
