Mandela’s legacy lives on in Sandton as Nurture and Nature Montessori welcomes Growing Seeds Preschool
Laughter, paint, and powerful moments of connection filled the air as children from different backgrounds came together at Nurture and Nature Montessori Sandton to honour Mandela Day.
Nurture and Nature Montessori Sandton opened its doors, and its heart, to children from Growing Seeds Preschool in Berea on July 18.
The school came alive with the cheerful sounds of play, music, and heartfelt connection, as they celebrated Mandela Day.
For many of the visiting children, it was their first experience in a structured early learning environment, and it unfolded into a day of genuine joy, warmth, and shared humanity.
The school’s marketing and admissions officer Stephanie Mundell said: “Today wasn’t just about celebration, it was about connection. These are the moments where real learning happens, when children experience empathy, not as a lesson, but as an act.”
The day was filled with hands-on, heart-led activities. The children painted side by side, swapped songs and giggles, shared stories, and formed bonds with new friends, all under the nurturing eyes of educators committed to creating inclusive and meaningful learning spaces.

In these small interactions, ubuntu came to life. ‘I am because we are’, echoed Nelson Mandela’s legacy in the laughter of children, who may come from different backgrounds, but are growing up with the same promise of hope.
“Seeing how naturally the children welcomed and supported one another was deeply moving,” said Mundell. “It reminds us that compassion doesn’t need to be taught, it needs to be shown, shared, and lived.”
More than an outreach effort, the day became a living classroom, where Mandela’s vision of a just, equal society found fertile ground in the open hearts of the children.

“As Mandela once said: ‘There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children’. That quote guides us daily,” said Mundell. “Our job is not only to educate minds but to shape hearts because today’s playmates are tomorrow’s peacemakers.
“Let’s raise a generation that doesn’t need to be told to care. Let’s raise one that already knows how.”
